BOOK OF THE MONTH SEPTEMBER 2007
READING ON REDEMPTION
Editors Raymond Coriveau C.Ss.R.
and Alberto
de Mingo Kaminouchi C.Ss.R.
General
Secretariate for Redemptorist Spirituality Rome 2006
This book represent one of the many
responses to the last General Chapter’s call to reflect on the mystery of
redemption, the heart of our charism.
Father General’s text “Redemption” (Communicanda 2) opens the
collection of articles. It is wise to
have this document in a permanent form and it sets the tone for the rest of the
articles.
There follow two articles looking at the
biblical notion of redemption, one by Michael
Brehl (Canada) and the other by Alberto de Mingo
(Spain). Both articles uncover the
riches of the biblical revelation about redemption and point up the futility of
trying to settle on one image or metaphor of this mystery. Alberto is shortly
to publish a book length study of redemption in terms of sacrifice and
atonement and his article here gives us a foretaste of what is to come.

JESUS OUR
REDEEMER
A Christian approach to
Salvation
Gerald O’Collins, S.J. Oxford University Press, Oxford 2007 pp280.
Ever
since the last General Chapter commended a serious reflection on the mystery of
Redemption, our attention has been drawn to different aspect of our charism as
Redemptorists. The first Communicanda
dealt with the theme of giving our lives for abundant redemption (as well as
restructuring for mission); the second
Communicanda was concerned with our pastoral understanding of redemption. O’Collins’ new book could have been written
for Redemptorists as it is a systematic treatment of the central issues which
define us as Redemptorists. While
remaining a profound theological exposition the text is richly enhanced with
the use of poetry, hymns, music, art, liturgy and literature. This makes for a pleasant read but one which
warms the heart of believers.

ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY AND THE REDEMPTORIST MISSION.
Octavio Hidalgo.
Editorial. Madrid 2006 pp72
The central point of interest in this
little work is the General Mission preached in Dijon from the 4th
March to the 2nd
April, 1899. There were 19 Redemptorists on the Mission and two of
them were assigned to a parish in which young Elizabeth Catez lived with her
widowed mother and younger sister. At the time of the Mission, Elizabeth was 18
years old and she kept a spiritual journal which is as revealing about the Mission as it is
about Elizabeth herself.
