Among the many ascetical works of St. Alphonsus Liguori there is a little gem entitled, The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.  This work is reflective of the fruits of the many meditations of St. Alphonsus on the Passion of the Lord.  St. Alphonus believed that "all of the saints learned the art of loving God" from the study of the passion and death of Jesus.  Or, to put it in yet another way, "who could love any other object besides Jesus when they see him dying in the midst of so many sufferings and insults in order to captivate our love?

For our purposes two small representations of his meditations are included in this collection.  The first is a small litany prayer entitled, Steps of the Passion.  The second is somewhat longer entitled, Little Chaplet of the Five Wounds of Jesus Crucified.

Steps of the Passion

My most loving Jesus, while praying in the garden you shed a sweat of blood, were in agony, and experienced sorrow until death.  Have mercy of us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, you were betrayed by Judas with a kiss, handed over to your enemies, taken prisoner by them and bound and abandoned by your disciples.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, declared guilty of death by the Council of Chief Priests, blindfolded in the house of Caiphas, struck, spat at, and ridiculed.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, led as an evildoer to Pilate, ridiculed by Herod and treated as a madman.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, stripped of your clothes, bound to a pillar and so cruelly scourged.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

<INVOCATION> My most loving Jesus, crowned with thorns, clothed in a red robe, struck at and in mockery saluted as the King of the Jews.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, rejected by your friends, made lower than Barabbas and then unjustly condemned by Pilate to die upon a cross.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, loaded with the wood of the cross and as an innocent lamb led away to death.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, nailed to the cross, placed between two theives, ridiculed and blasphemed, and for three hours was in agony.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, dead upon the cross and in the sight of your Holy Mother pierced on the side with a spear from which flowed blood and water.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, taken down from the cross and placed on the lap of your sorrowing Mother.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

My most loving Jesus, torn with a whip, bearing five wounds was laid in a tomb.  Have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us O Lord, have mercy on us.

Lord, as we venerate your sacred passion, by the power of your cross and death, deliver us from being eternally lost and lead us where you led the thief crucified with you.  We ask this you who live and reign forever and ever.  Amen.

Hope it's not too late to say Happy Easter to all. I am writing this article while listening to the television broadcasting Thai Political Riot in Bangkok. I strongly believe that when you read this article, it would be subsided and peace prevailed.  ; (

Unnoticed, I had upgraded this website to the newest version (joomla 1.0 to 1.5). New version means more new functions and applications. For time being I try to put some nice tracks for reflection which I hope you enjoy it.

Please pray for a better situation in Thailand

  • The Spirituality of St.Gerard
One might get the impression that Gerard lived a sad and painful life filled with mortifications and penances. Yet, that is far from the truth. Gerard, a schoolmaster reported, had been ‘always cheerful' in class, as an apprentice he had chosen a wrong moment to laugh at the foreman of the tailor's shop, later as the domestic servant of the irascible bishop, he had managed to ‘keep a good smile on him.'
